Goa is India's smallest state, but choosing where to stay there is a big decision. A beach hotel in Baga and a cottage in Agonda feel like two different holidays, and a long drive between the wrong airport and your hotel can take a large part of your first day.

This guide is for travellers planning and booking a Goa stay, whether it is a first visit, a family holiday, a heritage trip or a longer working break. It explains how the regions differ, how the seasons change what is open and how busy it is, how to get around, and exactly what to check on a hotel listing before you pay.

  • Best weatherNovember to February: drier and cooler, and also the busiest time.
  • MonsoonRoughly June to September: heavy rain, rough sea, many beach shacks closed.
  • AirportsManohar International, Mopa (GOX) in the north; Dabolim (GOI) near Vasco da Gama.
  • Main rail stationsThivim, Karmali, Madgaon (Margao), Vasco da Gama and Canacona.
  • First visit4 to 6 nights lets you see one beach area well and spend a day on heritage.
  • Getting aroundTaxis, licensed rentals and local buses. Distances add up quickly.
Every property is different

Facilities, house rules, availability, prices and booking steps vary by property and by room. Always confirm the details on the hotel's listing and on the TravelYaraa review page before you pay.

About the photos

The photos in this guide show real places in Goa to help you picture each area. They are not photos of TravelYaraa listings. Hotel availability and prices appear only in a live search.

North or South Goa: choosing your area

Goa looks compact on a map, but a road trip from the far north (Arambol) to the far south (Palolem) can easily take two to three hours. Most visitors are happiest picking one base, or splitting a longer trip between two. As a broad rule, North Goa is livelier, with more restaurants, markets and nightlife, while South Goa has longer, quieter beaches and more spread-out resorts. Within each half, the individual beach villages differ a lot.

AreaBest forKeep in mind
Calangute, Baga, Candolim (North)First-time visitors, busy beaches, lots of restaurants and shops, water sports. Candolim is a little calmer than Baga.Crowded and noisy in peak season, with traffic on the coast road. Check the real walking distance to the beach.
Anjuna, Vagator, Assagao (North)Cafés, markets, nightlife and cliff-top views. Assagao is inland and known for villa and boutique stays.Late-night music near some venues. From Assagao you will need transport to the beach.
Morjim, Ashwem, Mandrem, Arambol (far North)A slower pace, wide beaches, yoga and longer stays. Closest beach area to Mopa airport.Fewer large hotels. Many beach huts operate only in the dry season.
Panaji (Panjim) and FontainhasA city base with heritage walks, restaurants, river views and easy access to Old Goa.Not a beach stay. Lanes in the old quarter are narrow and parking is limited.
Old GoaThe UNESCO-listed churches and convents.Very few places to stay. Most visitors base themselves in Panaji, a short drive away.
Colva, Benaulim, Varca, Cavelossim (South)Families, long sandy beaches and larger resorts with pools and gardens.Quieter evenings. Resorts are spread out, so plan taxis for dinners and sightseeing.
Palolem, Agonda, Patnem (far South, Canacona)Scenic bays, beach huts and cottages, and a relaxed pace.A long drive from Mopa airport. Many huts and shacks close during the monsoon.

On TravelYaraa, searching for GOA, INDIA returns hotels across the state, and the Popular Places filter on the results page lets you narrow them to areas such as Calangute, Candolim, Baga, Vagator, Assagao, Arambol, Morjim, Panaji, Palolem and Majorda. The exact list depends on which hotels are returned for your dates.

Calangute, one of North Goa's busiest beaches, on an overcast day, with fishing boats just offshore.
Beach huts at Agonda in South Goa. Huts like these are often seasonal and may not open during the monsoon.

Which area suits you? Five example trips

These examples show how the choice of area follows from the kind of trip you want. They are planning ideas, not packages, and you can search and book each stay separately.

1. A couple's first visit (5 nights)

Spend three nights around Candolim or Calangute for easy beach days, restaurants and a sunset at Fort Aguada, then two nights in Panaji to walk Fontainhas and visit the churches of Old Goa without long drives. Two shorter stays often work better than one long stay far from everything.

2. A family with young children (5 to 6 nights)

Look at resorts around Colva, Benaulim, Varca or Cavelossim, or at Candolim in the north. Use the Amenities filter for Pool and Breakfast, then check each room's maximum occupancy (for example "Fits max. 2 guests") so that everyone, including children, is covered by the room you book. Add children under ROOMS & GUESTS (Children is for under-12s), and if you need two rooms, set Rooms to 2 rather than assuming an extra bed will be available.

3. Heritage and food (3 to 4 nights)

Stay in Panaji. Mornings are best for Old Goa's churches and the lanes of Fontainhas. Add a river evening on the Mandovi, a ferry to Divar island, and a half-day trip to a spice plantation around Ponda.

4. A working break (1 to 2 weeks)

Assagao, Siolim or Panaji suit longer stays. Aparthotels, apartments and guesthouses with a kitchen can be practical. Filter for Wifi and Air Conditioning, and read "About this property" for anything said about workspaces or power backup. If it isn't mentioned, ask the property rather than assuming. Outside peak season, the quieter months can suit focused work.

5. North and south on one trip (6 to 8 nights)

Book two separate stays, for example four nights in the north and three in the south. Check which airport each of your flights uses: arriving at Mopa and leaving from Dabolim can save a long drive on both days. Note the check-out time of the first hotel and the check-in time of the second, and plan a lunch stop or sightseeing in between.

When to go: seasons, crowds and prices

PeriodWhat to expectBooking tip
November to FebruaryThe driest and most comfortable weather, with beach shacks open and a full events calendar. Also the busiest time.Book early for Christmas and New Year, when demand is highest. Some properties set special conditions for these dates, so read the room details and hotel rules.
March to MayHot and humid, with fewer crowds as the season winds down.Air conditioning matters. Check that your room is not a Non-AC room unless that is what you want.
June to SeptemberMonsoon: heavy rain, green countryside and a rough sea. Swimming is often unsafe or restricted, and many shacks and some beach businesses close.Read "About this property" for any seasonal changes to services, and choose a refundable rate if your plans depend on the weather.
OctoberA transition month as the rain eases and businesses reopen.Check whether beach-side facilities are already open for your dates.

Festivals and busy dates. The Feast of St Francis Xavier on 3 December draws large crowds to Old Goa and Panaji. Christmas and New Year are the busiest period of the year. Goa Carnival is held before Lent, usually in February or March, and the spring festival of Shigmo follows. Carnival and Shigmo dates change every year, so check the current dates with official Goa Tourism sources before you book around them.

Prices on TravelYaraa come from live availability and change with demand, dates and room type. This guide does not quote prices. Compare the actual totals for your dates in the search results and on the review page.

Beaches, churches, forts and evenings out

Beaches and sea safety

The busiest beaches are in the north around Calangute and Baga, while the south has long stretches such as Colva and Benaulim and smaller bays like Palolem and Agonda. Many main beaches have lifeguards. Always follow their flags and instructions, don't swim at night or after drinking, and take monsoon warnings seriously.

Old Goa's churches

The "Churches and Convents of Goa" have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. The best known is the Basilica of Bom Jesus, which holds the tomb of St Francis Xavier, and the Sé Cathedral stands close by. These are working places of worship: dress modestly, keep your voice down during services and follow any photography signs.

Fontainhas and Panaji

Fontainhas, Panaji's old Latin Quarter, is known for its brightly painted houses, balconies and small chapels. Walk it in the morning or late afternoon when it is cooler. Panaji also has riverside promenades and boarding points for evening cruises on the Mandovi.

Forts

Fort Aguada, near Candolim, has a 17th-century Portuguese fort and an old lighthouse overlooking the Arabian Sea. Chapora Fort above Vagator is a popular sunset viewpoint. Cabo de Rama in the south is quieter and further from the main resort areas.

Evenings and nightlife

Nightlife is concentrated around Baga, Calangute, Anjuna and Vagator. If you want lively evenings, staying within walking distance saves taxi rides late at night. If you want quiet, check the map before booking: a hotel next to a club can be noisy until late, while one a few streets inland may be peaceful. South Goa evenings are generally calmer, built around beach restaurants and resort dining.

Getting there and getting around

Check which airport your flight uses

Goa has two airports. Manohar International Airport at Mopa (GOX) is in the far north of the state, and Dabolim (GOI) is near Vasco da Gama in the south-central part. "Goa" on a ticket is not enough, so look for the airport code. Mopa is the more convenient airport for the northern beaches, and Dabolim is usually closer to South Goa. A transfer from Mopa to a far-south beach such as Palolem can take well over two hours, so factor this into your hotel choice and arrival time.

Trains

Most long-distance trains run on the Konkan Railway. Thivim and Pernem serve North Goa, Karmali is close to Old Goa and Panaji, Madgaon (Margao) is the main station for South Goa, and Canacona is the nearest station for Palolem and Agonda. Vasco da Gama is served by a separate line. Check which station your train actually stops at before choosing a hotel area.

Taxis, rentals and parking

  • Airport and station taxis: use the official taxi counters, and confirm the fare before you set off. If a property offers a transfer, confirm the price and pickup details with the property in advance.
  • Scooters and cars: rent only from licensed operators. You need a valid driving licence (foreign visitors usually need an International Driving Permit with their home licence), and helmets are compulsory on two-wheelers. Never drink and drive.
  • Parking: if you are driving, use the Parking amenity filter, and remember that Fontainhas and some beach lanes are very narrow.
  • Distances: for each day trip, check the drive time on a map from your shortlisted hotel. It is a quick way to see whether an area really suits your plans.

Choosing a property type and room plan

A Goa search on TravelYaraa can include many property types. The Property Type filter lists the ones in your results, such as Hotel, Resort, Villa, GuestHouse, Bed & breakfast, Hostel, Aparthotel, Apartment, Cottage, Private Vacation Home and Holiday Park.

TypeOften suitsWhat to check
ResortFamilies and relaxed holidays with a pool and on-site dining. The real distance to the beach (beaches in India are public, so "beach access" usually means a path, not a private beach), and which activities cost extra.
HotelShort stays and central locations.Room size and view, the room's maximum occupancy, and noise from the road.
Villa or Private Vacation HomeGroups and families who want space and a kitchen.House rules, how check-in works, who to contact on arrival, housekeeping frequency and any security deposit.
GuestHouse, Bed & breakfast, CottageSmaller, local-style stays.Stairs, air conditioning, hot water and reception hours, especially for late arrivals.
Aparthotel or ApartmentLonger stays and self-catering.Kitchen equipment, cleaning schedule and laundry.
HostelSolo and budget travellers.Dorm or private room, lockers and any age rules.

Meal plans

The Meal Basis filter shows plans such as Room Only, Breakfast and Half Board, and you may also see a plan like Breakfast for 1. Read the plan carefully: if two of you book a room labelled "Breakfast for 1", ask the property whether breakfast for the second guest is charged separately. In busy beach areas with plenty of cafés, Room Only can be a good choice. At a remote resort, Breakfast or Half Board may be more convenient.

AC or Non-AC

Goa is humid for much of the year. Room names often tell you what you are getting. For example, "Standard Non AC Room" is a real room name we saw on a live Goa listing. If air conditioning matters to you, check the room name and its details, not just the hotel's general amenities.

Goa-specific checks before you book

  • The address and the map, not just the name. Tap "Show on map" on the hotel page. During our research we saw a listing whose name mentioned a South Goa beach but which appeared under a North Goa area in the Popular Places filter. The address and map are what tell you where you will actually be.
  • Walking distance to the beach. "Near the beach" can mean two minutes or twenty. Check the route on the map, especially with children or luggage.
  • Noise. In Baga, Calangute, Anjuna and Vagator, check what is next door. Clubs and bars can be loud late at night.
  • Accessibility. Listings can include lines such as "Wheelchair Accessible", "Upper Floors Accessible By Stairs Only", "No Accessible Shuttle" or "Braille Or Raised Signage". Read them, and contact the property directly if you have specific needs.
  • Check-in and check-out times. One Goa listing we checked showed "Check-in from 12:00 PM" and "Check-out until 11:00 AM", but times vary by property. Compare them with your flight or train times.
  • Seasonal operations. During the monsoon some beach properties reduce services or close. Read "About this property" and the hotel rules for your dates.
  • The amenities you need. Use the Amenities filter (for example Wifi, Pool, Parking, Breakfast, Air Conditioning), then confirm them on the hotel page and in the room details.

Understanding the price: taxes, totals and offers

Results show a price per stay, such as "Total for 1 night", for each hotel. When you choose a room and reach Review Your Booking, the Payment Summary shows the Room Price, Taxes & Fees and the Total Payment. Use the Total Payment on the review page to compare options, because it reflects the exact room, dates and guests you selected and can differ from the figure on the results card.

How GST works on hotel rooms

Since 22 September 2025, GST on hotel accommodation in India depends on the value of the room per night:

Room value per nightGSTExample
₹1,000 or lessNil₹900 per night: no GST.
₹1,001 to ₹7,5005%₹6,000 per night: ₹300 GST, so ₹6,300 per night.
Above ₹7,50018%₹9,000 per night: ₹1,620 GST, so ₹10,620 per night.

These examples only show how the slabs work. Tax rules can change, and the Taxes & Fees line for a particular rate may include other charges, so always rely on the Payment Summary for your actual booking.

Charges at the property

The review page reminds you that "Check-in/out requirements and deposits may vary by hotel". Villas and some resorts may ask for a refundable security deposit at check-in, and optional services such as transfers, activities or extra meals are usually paid at the property. Check "About this property" and the hotel rules.

Offers

The review page has a TravelYaraa Offer field where you can apply a code. Eligibility and terms are checked when you apply it, and only offers that are currently active will work. Don't base your hotel choice on an offer until you have seen it applied in the Payment Summary.

Cancellation and refund terms

Each room option shows its cancellation status, for example Free cancellation until a specific date, Cancellation charges may apply, or Non-refundable. Tap View cancellation to see the full table with "On or After", "On or Before" and "Charges/Comments" columns, which shows exactly what you would pay if you cancelled on a given date.

  • For peak dates such as Christmas and New Year, or monsoon trips that depend on the weather, a refundable rate gives you more flexibility, even if a non-refundable one is cheaper.
  • Note the exact dates in the cancellation table. A deadline can be several days before check-in.
  • After booking, you can request a hotel cancellation from My Bookings. TravelYaraa first shows the cancellation charges, and you then confirm whether to go ahead. Any refund follows the policy shown for your booking.

  4. Select CHECK-IN, CHECK-OUT and ROOMS & GUESTS. Under More options, check the Nationality and Country of Residence, then tap SEARCH HOTELS.
  5. On the results page, open Filters to narrow by Popular Places, Property Type, Meal Basis, Amenities, Star Category and Price Range, or use Search by Hotel Name. Use Sort by to reorder the list.

Arrival checklist

  • Your booking details from My Bookings, saved offline along with the property's address and phone number.
  • Valid government-issued photo ID for the guests, with names matching the booking. Indian guests commonly use Aadhaar, a passport, a driving licence or a voter ID, but the property decides what it accepts.
  • Foreign nationals: carry your passport with a valid Indian visa or OCI card. Accommodation providers must report foreign guests to the authorities, so the property will ask to see and record these documents.
  • Your check-in time. If you arrive early, ask whether you can leave your luggage until your room is ready.
  • A payment method for any deposit or local charges mentioned in the hotel rules.
  • Modest clothing for church visits, sun protection, and insect repellent during and after the monsoon.

In short

Pick your Goa base first and your hotel second. North Goa suits lively, busy holidays, Panaji suits heritage and food, and South Goa suits quieter beach time. Match your area to your airport or station, avoid the monsoon if beach days are the priority, and book early for December. Before paying, check the map, the room's occupancy and meal plan, the cancellation table and the Total Payment on the review page.
